One mole of acetone requires less heat to vaporise than 1 mol of water. Which of the two liquids has higher enthalpy of vaporisation ?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

One mole of acetone requires less heat to vaporise than 1 mole of water.
Hence, acetone has less enthalpy of vaporisation and water has higher enthalpy of vaporisation.
It can be represented as `( Delta H_V) "water" gt (Delta H_V)` acetone.

Calculate the entropy increase in the evaporation of 1 mole of a liquid when it boils at 100^@C having heat of vaporisation at 100^@C as 540 cals\gm.

Mixture of two liquids A and B is placed in cylinder containing piston. Piston is pulled out isotehrmally so that volume of liquid decreases but that of vapour increases. When negligibly small amount of liquid was remaining the mole fraction of A in vapour is 0.4 . Given P_(A)^(@) = 0.4 atm and P_(B)^(@) = 1.2 atm at the experimental temperature. Calculate the total pressure at whcih the liquid has almost evaporated. (Assume ideal behaviour)

(b) Show that the inter molecular distance for water is d=((M_(A))/(N_(A))xx(1)/(rho_(w)))^((1)/(3)) and find its value. (c ) 1 g of water in the vapour state at 1 atm occupies 1601cm^(3) , estimate the intermolecular distance at boiling point in the vapour state. (d) During vaporisation a molecule overcomes a force F, assumed constant to go from an inter molecular distance d to d .Estimate the value of F.
