What happends when iodobenzene is heated with copper powder at `200^(@)C` ?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

When iodobenzene is heated with Cu powder at `200^(@)C` in a sealed tube, biphenyl is formed
`C_(6)H_(5)I + 2Cu + IC_(6)H_(5) rarr C_(6)H_(5)- C_(6)H_(5) + Cu_(2)I_(2)`. This is called Ullmann reaction
Aryl chlorides and bromides usually do not give this reaction uless the halogen is activated by suitable substituents `(-NO_(2))` in the ortho or para position.
