The reaction between ethanoic acid and ethanol is reversible even in an open vessel. Why?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Both ethanoic acid and ethanol are liquids. They are react to give ethylethanoate an ester. The ester reacts with the other product water to give back acid and alcohol. The ester formation reaction is reversible and is given as,
`CH_3COOH(l)+C_2H_5 OH(l) leftrightarrow CH_3COO C_2H_5 (l) +H_2O(l)`
Since there are no gases and the substances practically do not escape, the reaction is reversible even in a open vessel.
