Arrange n-hexane, 3-methyl pentane and 2...

Arrange n-hexane, 3-methyl pentane and 2,2-dimethyl butane in the increasing order of their boiling points and discuss.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Because all possess the same molecular mass, they should possess the same boiling point.
But the boiling point order :
2,2-dimethylbutane `lt` 3-methylpentane `lt` n-hexane.
2,2-Dimethyl butane is more spherical and has the smallest surface area. n-Hexane has the longest chain and largest surface area.
Of the same moleculasr mass, larger the surface area, greater is the boiling point.
