Compare the number of hydrogen atoms per...

Compare the number of hydrogen atoms per carbon atom of an arene with that of an alkane, having same number of carbon atoms.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Arene is a cyclic aromatic hydrocarbon
The general formula of arene is `C_nH_(2n-6x)`, where x represents number of carbon atoms present in it. Arene has less number of hydrogen atoms per carbon atom, compared to that of an alkane.
For example, a six carbon arene, benzene has one hydrogen atom per carbon atom.
But a six carbon alkane, hexane has 2.333 H atoms per each.
