Calculate the average energy required to extract a nucleon from the nucleus of an `alpha ` - particle ,proton and neutron are 4.00150 a.m.u 1.00728 a.m.u and 1.00867 amu respectively .

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Mass defect, `(Deltam)=2(m_p+m_n)-m_N`
=4.0319-4.00150=0.0304 amu
Binding energy of `alpha`-particle = `Deltamxx931.5` MeV
=0.034 x 931.5 = 28.3 MeV
Average energy required to extract nucleon
`=28.3/4` = 7.07 MeV
