Unpolarized light passes through two pol...

Unpolarized light passes through two polaroids, the axis of one is vertical and that of the other is `30^@` to the vertical . What is the orientation and intensity of the transmitted light ?

The correct Answer is:
3

The first polaroid eliminates half the light, so the intensity is reduced by half: `I_(1)= I_(0)//2`. The light reaching the second polarizer is vertically polarized and so is reduced in intensity to
`I_(2)= I_(1) (cos 30^(@))^(2) = (3)/(4) I_(1)`
Thus `I_(2)= 3I_(0)//8`
`therefore n= 3`
