A metre stick is balanced on a knife edge at its centre. When two coins, each of mass 5 g are put one on top of the other at the 12.0 cm mark, the stick is found to be balanced at 45.0 cm. What is the mass of the metre stick?

Suppose a mass of metre stick is M and its centre at E.
If a metre stick is balanced on a knife edge from distance 45 cm, then new gravitational centre is D.
`therefore` Distance `DE=OE-OD=50-45`
= 5 cm
When two coins are put one on the top of the other at the 12.0 mark, then distance between C and D is = `45-12`
= 33 cm
From rotational equilibrium
`MxxDE=(2xx5)xxCD`
where mass of each coin is 5g
`therefore Mxx5=10xx33`
`therefore M=66g`
`therefore` mass of metre stick is 66.0 g

A metre stick is pivoted about its centre. A piece of wax of mass 20 g travelling horizontally and perpendicular to it at 5 m/s strikes and adheres to one end of the stick so that the stick starts to rotate in a horizontal circle. Given the moment of inertia of the stick and wax about the pivot is 0.02 kg m^(2) , the initial angular velocity of the stick is :

Give the magnitude and direction of (a) the force on the 7th coin (counted from the bottom) due to all the coins on its top, (b) the force on the 7th coin by the eighth coin, (c) the reaction of the 6th coin on the 7th coin

Figure shows an equiconvex lens (of refractive index 1.50) in contact with a liquid layer on top of a plane mirror. A small needle with its tip on the principal axis is moved along the axis until its inverted image is found at the position of the needle. The distance of the needle from the lens is measured to be 45.0 cm. The liquid is removed and the experiment is repeated. The new distance is measured to be 30.0 cm. What is the refractive index of the liquid ?

A short bar magnet placed in a horizontal plane has its axis aligned along the magnetic north-south direction. Null points are found on the axis of the magnet at 14 cm from the centre of the magnet. The earth's magnetic Meld at the place is 0.36 G and the angle of dip 18 zero. What is the total magnetic feld on the normal bisector of the magnet at the same distance as the mull-point (i.e., 14 cm) from the centre of the magnet? At rull points, field due to a magnet 1s equal and opposite to the horizontal component of earth's magnetic field.)

A solenoid 60 cm long and of radius 4.0 cm has 3 layers of windings of 300 turns each. A 2.0 cm long wire of mass 2.5 g lies inside the solenoid (near its centre) normal to its axis, both the wire and the axis of the solenoid are in the horizontal plane. The wire is connected through two leads parallel to the axis of the solenoid to an external battery which supplies a current of 6.0 A in the wire. What value of current (with appropriate sense of circulation) in the windings of the solenoid can support the weight of the wire?
