Since four spheres of M and radius R are placed at the corners of a square having side .a.. The moment of inertia about the side AD and the centre of A & D is
`I_(A)=I_(D)=(2)/(5)MR^(2)`
The moment of inertia of sphere B and C about side AD is
`I_(B)=I_(C)=(2)/(5)MR^(2)=Ma^(2)` [from theorem of parallel axis]
`therefore` Moment of inertia of the system about side `AD, I_(AD)` = The moment of inertia of A about AD + The moment of inertia of D about AD + The moment of inertia of B about AD + The moment of inertia of C about AD
`therefore I_(AD)=(2)/(5)MR^(2)+(2)/(5)MR^(2)+(2)/(5)MR^(2)+Ma^(2)+(2)/(5)MR^(2)+Ma^(2)`
`=4xx(2)/(5)MR^(2)+2Ma^(2)`
`therefore I_(AD)=2((4)/(5)MR^(2)+Ma^(2))`

Inertia is a scalar quantity

Assertion: Distance is a scalar quantity. Reason: Distance is the length of path traversed.

Assertion: Distance is a actual length of the path but displacement is a shortest distance between initial and final position. Reason: Distance is a scalar quantity and it is always positive but displacement is a vector quantity. It may be positive, negative or zero.
