In a hydrocarbon chain, the element replacing hydrogen is referred to as a heteroatom.
In a hydrocarbon chain, hydrogen atom/s can be replaced by heteroatoms, such that the valency of carbon remain satisfied.
Examples :
(1) Halogens like chlorine, bromine.
(2) Oxygen, nitrogen and sulphur elements.
