A mixture contains equal volumes of 0.IM KCN and 0.05M HCl solutions. Can it act as buffer ?Why?

Text Solution

The mixture acts as a buffer. Combination of KCN with HCl, HCN is produced
KCN + HCl `to` KCl + HCN
Milliequivalents of HCN is 0.05 V. Milliequivalents of KCN is (0.1V-0.05V =) 0.05V. The solution contains equal quantities of weak acid HCN and its conjugate base CN. Hence the given mixture is an acidic buffer solution.
