Why sodium peroxide is used in submarines?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Submarine is a closed vessel and carbondioxide is accumulated in it.
Sodium peroxide is basic. It absorbs carbondioxide from atmosphere and releases pure oxygen.
`2Na_(2)O_(2)+2CO_(2)rarr 2Na_(2)CO_(3)+O_(2)`
In submarines use of `Na_(2)O_(2)` cleans air and avoids suffocation.
