Among halides of alkaline earth metals f...

Among halides of alkaline earth metals fluorides are less soluble, but `BeF_(2)` is more soluble. Why?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Lattice energies of ionic fluorides are high. Hence, fluorides of alkaline earth metals are less soluble. `BeF_(2)` is covalent and has the tendency to form hydrogen bonding with water. `BeF_(2)` is more soluble in water due to high hydration energy of `Be^(2+)` ion
