Why dilute hydrochloric acid is preferred to dilute sulphuric and for the preparation of carbondioxide from marble?

In case of dilute sulphuric acid, calcium sulphite is formed. This is deposited on the surface of marble and acts as a protective layer. This layer stops the further reaction to liberate carbondioxide.
