As the altitude (height) from the earth.s surface gradually increases, the earth.s atmosphere becomes rarer. Hence, the refractive index of the air decreases continuously.
So a ray of light coming from the Sun towards an observer continuously passes from an optically rarer to optically denser medium and bends towards the normal. Thus, its direction of propagation changes continuously.

The actual sunrise or sunset begins when the Sun reaches the horizon.
In figure, `S_(1)` is the actual position of the Sun a little below the horizon.
In this case, the light rays coming from `S_(1)`, continuously get refracted in the earth.s atmosphere (atmospheric refraction) and reach the observer as shown in the figure.
The tangent drawn to the curved path of the ray at point P passes through `S_(2)`, above the horizon.
`S_(2)` is the apparent position of the Sun.
Thus, during the sunrise, the Sun is seen even though it is little below the horizon. Similarly, during the sunset it is seen for sometime even though it is little below the horizon.
Taking the refractive index of air as 1.00029 the apparent angular shift in the position of the Sun is found to be approximately `((1)/(2))^(@)`.
Now, for angular displacement of `180^(@)` of the Sun, time required is 12 hours. Hence for angular displacement of `((1)/(2))^(@)` of the Sun, time required is
`(((1)/(2))^(@)xx 12 "hours")/(180^(@))`
= 0.03333 hour
= 1.9998 minutes
=2 minutes
Due to advance sunrise and delayed sunset the duration of a day increases by about 4minutes.

A ray of light travelling with a speed c leaves point 1 shown in figure and is reflected to point 2. The ray strikes the reflecting surface at a distance x from point 1. According to Fermat's principle of least time, among all possible paths between two points , the one actually taken by a ray of light is that for which the time taken is the least (In fact there are some cases in which the time taken by a ray is maximum rather than a minimum). Which of the following statement is in accordance with Fermat's principle

Aim : To study the displacement reaction taking place between iron nail and solution of copper sulphate. Activity: Take three iron nails and clean their surface by rubbing them with a sand paper. Take two test tubes labelled as (A) and (B). Take about 10 mL solution of copper sulphate in each test tube. Tie two iron nails with a thread and immerse them in copper sulphate solution for about 20 minutes. Keep one iron nail aside for comparison. Take out the iron nails from the copper sulphate solution after 20 minutes. Compare the colour of both iron nails with the nail kept aside. Compare the intensity of the colour of copper sulphate solutions of both the test tubes, (A) and (B). What type of chemical reaction occur, when iron nail is dipped in copper sulphate solution ?
