A bullet is fired into a huge wooden block . The bullet while moving inside the block loses half the velocity when it travles 6 cm inside the block . hOe far , then would it go inside the block ? And becomes rest .

A

`3.0 `cm

B

`2.5` cm

C

`2.0`cm

D

`1.5` cm

The correct Answer is:
D

Initial kinetic energy of bullet `= 1/2 mv_(0)^(2)`
The kinetic energy ,ehrn the velocity becomes half ` = (mv_(0)^(2))/8`
` :. K - K_(0) = W`
`(mv_(0)^(2))/8 -1/2 mv_(0)^(2) =Fd`
` = - 3/8 mv_(0)^(2)=F(6)`
` :. F = (mv_(0)^(2))/16`
Kinetic energy ,when the velocity become `1/4` th of intial velocity
` :. K = (mv_(0)^(2))/32`
` :. K - K = W`
` = (mv_(0)^(2))/32 = (mv_(0)^(2))/8 = Fd`
` = (3mv_(0)^(2))/32 = - (mv_(0)^(2))/16 d`
` : 3/2 = d`
` :. d = 1.5 cm `

A bullet is fired into a huge wooden block. The bullet while moving inside the block loses halfthe velocity when it travels 3 cm inside the block. How far, then would it go inside the block ? Resistive force is constant.

Newton's laws of motion can be applied to a block in liquid also force due to liquid (e.g. upthrust) are also considered in addition to toher forces. A small block of weight W is kept inside. The block is attached with a string connected to the bottom of the vessel. Tension in the string is W//2 Q. If weight of the block is doubled then tension in the string becomes x times and the time calculated above becomes y times then

Two blocks of masses 2kg and M are at rest on an inclined plane and are separated by a distance of 6.0m as shown. The coefficient of friction between each block and the inclined plane is 0.25 . The 2kg block is given a velocity of 10.0m//s up the inclined plane. It collides with M, comes back and has a velocity of 1.0m//s when it reaches its initial position. The other block M after the collision moves 0.5m up and comes to rest. Calculate the coefficient of restitution between the blocks and the mass of the block M. [Take sintheta=tantheta=0.05 and g=10m//s^2 ]

Ballistic Pendulum: A ballistic pendulum is used to measure speed of bullets. It consists of a wooden blocksuspended from fixed support. A wooden block mass M is suspended with the help of two threads to prevent rotation while swinging. A bullet of mass m moving horizontally with velocity v_(0) hits the block and becomes embedded in the block. Receiving momentum from the bullet, the bullet in terms of given quatities.

A bullet of mass 50g moving with velocity 600m//s hits block of mass 1.0kg placed on a rough horizontal ground and comes out of the block with a velocity of 400m//s . The coefficient of friction between the block and the ground is 0.25 . Neglect loss of mass of the block as the bullet pierces through it. (a) In spite of the fact that friction acts a an external force, can you apply principle of conservation of momentum during interaction of the ullet with the block? (b) Find velocity of the block immediately after the bullet pierces through it. (c)FInd the distance the block will travel before it stops.

A wooden block of mass 2 kg rests on a soft horizontal floor. When an iron cylinder of mass 25 kg is placed on top of the block, the floor yields steadily and the block and the cylinder together go down with an acceleration of 0.1 m s^(-2) . What is the action of the block on the floor (a) before and (b) after the floor yields ? Take g = 10 m s^(-2) . Identify the action-reaction pairs in the problem.

A spring of force constant k is kept in the compressesd condition between two blocks masses m and M on the smooth surface of a table as shown in figure .When the spring is released , both the blocks move in opposite directions .When the spring attains the orginal (normal ) position . both blocks lose the constacts with the spring . If x is the intial compression of the spring find the speeds of block while getting detached from the spring .
