Assertion: The portion of the myofibril between two successive Z-lines is considered as the functional unit of contraction called sarcomere.
Reason: During contraction, l-bands get reduced whereas A-bands retain the length , thereby causing shortening of the sarcomere.

The correct Answer is:
b

Each myofibril contains actin and myosin filaments which give it striated appearance due to dark and light bands. The lights band whereas the dark bands are called 'A' or anisotropic bands the contain myosin. Both the proteins are arranged as rod like structures, parallel to each other and also to the longitudinal axis of the myofibirals. In the centre of each I-band is an elastic fibre called Z - line which bisects it. The portion of the myofibrial between two successive Z-lines is considered as the functional unit of contraction and is called a sarcomere. During contraction, the Z-lines attached to the actins are pulled inwards thereby causing a shortening of the sarcomere, i.e., contraction. Hence during shortening of the muscle, i.e., contraction, the I-bands get reduced, whereas the A-bands retain the length

The distance or length of the myofibril between two adjacent z-bands is called

Sarcomere is the functional unit of contraction in a muscle fibre. Indentify the portion of myofibril that constitutes a sarcomere

The steps involved in the mechanism of muscle contraction are given below. Arrange the steps in proper sequential order and select the correct option. I. Release of calcium ions in the sarcoplasm. II. Signal sent by the CNS via a motor neuron. III. Binding of calcium with a subunit of troponin on actin filaments. IV. Generation of the action potential in the sarcolemma. V. Binding of myosin head to the exposed active sites on actin to form a cross-bridge. VI. Inward pulling of ‘Z’ line attached to actin causing shortening of the sarcomere. VII. Pulling of the attached actin filaments towards the centre of 'A' band. VIII. Release of neurotransmitter acetylcholine and generation of the action potential in the sarcolemma.

During contraction, what changes would you expect to see in the various lines, bands, and zones of the sarcomere, on the basis of the sliding filament hypothesis?

Read the given Statements for skeletal muscles (i) Thin filaments are firmly attached to the Z - line . (ii) The light band is also called the I - band and contains mostly actin. (iii) A sarcomere is the functional unit of a myofibril between two adjacent A - bands . (iv) The central part of the thick filament , not overlapped by the thick filament is called the H - zone Which of these is/are CORRECT ?
