Following table shows data on amino acid substitution in the `alpha` chain of haemoglobin in four different mammalian species A,B,C and D on the basis of the data shown in the table. Choose the most appropriate evolutionary tree from those given below.

A

B

C

D

The correct Answer is:
D

The molecular clock is the concept that during evolution the number of subsitutions in the nucleotides or nucleic acids (DNA or RNA) and hence in the protein encoded by nucleic acid, is proportional to time. The molecular clock uses fossil constraints and rates of molecular change to deduce the time in geologicv history when two species or other taxa diverged. It is used to estimate the time of occurrence of evetns called speciationor radiation.

Given below is the representation of amino acid composition of the relevant translated portion of beta -chain of haemoglobin, related to the shape of human red blood cells. (a) Is this representation indicating a normal human or a sufferer from certain related genetic disease? Give reason in support of your answer. (b) What difference would be noticed in the phenotype of the normal and the sufferer related to this gene? (c) Who are likely to suffer more from the defect related to the gene represented the males, the females or both males and females equally? And why?
