A compass is a device used to find (and show) the direction of magnetic field at a point .
`to` A compass consists of a tiny magnet , usually in the form of a pointer , pivoted such that it can rotate freely in a horizontal plane .

`to` The tiny magnet in the compass is also called magnetic needle (or just a needle ) . It is a small bar magnet .
`to` The ends of the compass needle point approximately towards the geographic north and south direction .
`to` In , fact they point towards the magnetic south and north direction of the earth , as the earth behaves liek a giant bar magnet .
