How does a solenoid behave like a magnet ? Can you determine the north and south poles of a current - carrying solenoid with the help of a bar magneti ? Explain.

Text Solution

(1) A current- carrying solenoid behaves like a bar magnet and the polarities of its ends depend upon the direction of the current through it .
(2) Yes, we can use a bar magnet to determine the north and south poles of a current - carrying solenoid .
(3) In order to determine the magnetic poles of a current - carrying solenoid place it in a brass hook and suspend it with a long thread so that it can moves freely in a horizontal plane.
Bring the north pole of a bar magnet near one of its ends . If that end of the solenoid moves towards the bar magnet , then it must be its south pole and the other end its north pole . On the contrary, if that end of the solenoid moves away from the magnet , then it must be its north pole and the other end its south pole .
