The function of the split ring : Due to the split ring commutator in an electric motor , the direction of the current through the coil is reversed after every half rotation of the coil . This reverses the direction of the force acting on the two arms of the coil . The arm that was earlier pushed downward in now pushed upwards downward is now pushed upward . while the other arm is now pushed downward. Therefore , the coil continues to rotate in the same direction .
