Why is acetic acid stronger than phenol ...

Why is acetic acid stronger than phenol whereas formic acid is stronger than acetic acid?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

In acetate ion -ve charge is decolised over two oxygen atoms as compared to phenoxide ion which -ve charge is delocalised over one oxygen atom, therefore, `CH_(3)COOH` is stronger acid than phenol. Acetic acid is weaker acid than formic because acetate ion is less statble than formate ion due to +I-effect of `-CH_(3)` group.
