An example of participation of local people that has led to the efficient management of forests is as follows:
In 1972, the West Bengal Forest Department realised its failure in improving damaged .Sal. forests in the South Western district of the state.
Because of the efforts of forest officer, A. K. Banerjee, villagers were allowed to help in the protection of 1272 hectares of severely damaged .Sal forests in the Arabari forest range of Midnapore district.
In return, villagers were given work in both silviculture and harvesting operations, 25 % of the final harvest among other benefits. Also allowed fuelwood and fodder collection on payment of normal fee.
The active and willing participation of the local community led the Sal forest of Arabari underwent a remarkable recovery by 1983.
