For circuits used for transporting electric power, a low power factor implies large power loss in transmission. Explain.

Average power spent in series AC circuit is,
`P = V_(rms) I_(rms) cos phi`
`:. I_(rms) = ( P )/( V_(rms) cos phi)`
From above equation, we can say that for given value of power to be delivered at given voltage. P and `V_(rms)` are constants. Hence, If power factor `cosphi` is small then `I_(rms)` would increase and so power loss `I_(rms)^(2) R` will be more. Thus, there would be greater transmission lowss.
