Write short note : Analogous organs

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

The organs which are similar in appearance and carry out similar functions but fundamentally different in their basic structure and origin are called analogous organs.
The wings of bats are skin folds stretched mainly between elongated fingers. The wings of birds are a feathery covering all along the arm. The designs of the two wings, their structure and components, are thus very different.

They look similar because they have a common use for flying, but their origins are not common. This makes them analogous in nature, rather than homologous.
The presence of analogous organs in different animals provides evidences that these animals are not evolved and originated from a common ancestor, but to survive in the environment they have become stronger by adopting to similar functional organs.
