Explain sex determination mechanism in honey bees.

(1) Sex determination in Honey bee is based on the number of set of chromosomes an individual receives.
(2) An offspring formed from the union of a sperm and an egg develops as a female [Queen or worker]. They are diploid having 32 chromosomes.
(3) An unfertilized egg develops as a male (drone) by means of parthenogenesis. Males have half number of chromosomes than the female i.e, 16 chromosomes. This is called haplo-diploid sex determination.
(4) Males produce sperms by mitosis, they do not have a father and cannot have sons both have grand father and can have grand sons.
