What is Bt toxin? How does this toxin kill cotton boll worms?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

It is a toxin produced by bacterium Bacillus thuringiensis and is used as a bio- pesticide. Inactive toxin protein crystals are converted in to an active form due to the alkaline pH in the gut of boll worms. The activated toxin binds to the surface of midgut epithelial cells and creates pores that cause swelling, lysis and eventually death of boll worms, which feed on the leaves of genetically modified cot plants.
