Caustic soda is used to separate a mixture of ferric chloride and aluminium chloride. Explain.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Both ferric chloride and aluminium chloride react with caustic soda to give the respective metal hydroxides.
`FeCI_(3)+3NaOH to Fe(OH)_(3)+2NaCI , AICI+3NaOH to AI(OH)_(3)+3NaCI`
`Fe(OH)_(3)` is basic, but `AI(OH)_(3)` is amphotric as it is soluble in excess caustic soda to give metaaluminate.
`AI(OH)_(3)+NaOH to Na[AI(OH)_(4)]`
`FeCI_(3)` is insoluble and is separated by filtration.
