A solution of ferrous sulphate was kept ...

A solution of ferrous sulphate was kept in an aluminium can. After few days, the can was found to have a number of holes in it. Explain the observation and write the chemical equation involved.

Aluminium is more reactive than iron. So, when aluminium can is used to store ferrous sulphate solution, aluminium displaces iron from ferrous sulphate solution forming aluminium sulphate and iron. Thus, when aluminium can is used to store ferrous sulphate solution, holes develop in the can in a few days.

What will you observe when zinc granules are added to ferrous sulphate solution? Write the chemical reaction involved.

A student performed following two activities in school laboratory: Activity 1: Addition of zinc dust into copper sulphate solution taken in a test tube. Activity 2: Addition of an iron nail into copper sulphate solution taken in a test tube. He noted down his observations and concluded that chemical reaction occurs in both the cases based on the observed colour change of the resulting solution. Based on these activities, what can you conclude about the reactivity of elements zinc and iron as compared to that of copper?
