Explain the following:
When a copper coin is dipped in silver nitrate solution, a glitter appears on the coin after some time, Why does this happen? Write the chemical equation.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

i.Copper is more reactive than silver. Therefore, copper displaces silver from its salt solution, silver nitrate. The glittering white deposit of silver metal is formed on the copper coin. Hence, when a copper coin is dipped in silver nitrate solution, a glitter appears on the coin after some time.
ii. The reaction is as follows: `underset"Copper"(Cu_((s))) + underset"Silver nitrate "(2AgNO_(3(aq))) to underset"Copper (II) nitrate"(Cu(NO_3)_(2(aq))) + underset"Silver"(2Ag_((s)))`
