Role of microbes in compost production :
i. Microbes such as bacteria, fungi and actinomycetes break down complex organic compounds into simpler inorganic substances and thus compost is formed.
ii. The microbes in the compost pile feed on the orgainc matter and free important minerals and nutrients like nitrogen, carbon, phosphorus, etc., that can be used to imporove the fertility of soil.
iii. The microbes carry out degradation to release humus along with water, `CO_(2)` and heat.
