Balance the following equation stepwise.
`Ag_((s))+HCl_((aq))rarrAgCldarr +H_2uarr`

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Step I: Write the chemical equation
`Ag_(S)+HCl_((aq)) rarr AgCl darr + H_2 uarr`
Step II: Compare the number of atoms of the various elements present on the two sides of the equation.

Step III: Choose the reactant of product having maximum number of atoms and equalize its atoms on both the sides. Equalize the number of atoms of remaining elements in the reactants and products.
There are theose compounds which have same number of atoms. Thererfore , any one of them can be selected. Select HCl and balance H atoms.

Apply a factor '2' to the reactant HCl,
`Ag(s)+2HCl_((aq))rarr AgCl darr + H_2 uarr`
Check whether the equation is balanced. The number of chlorine atoms is unequal on th two sides. Balance Cl atoms.

Apply a factor 2 to the product 'AgCl'
`Ag_((s))+2HCl_((aq)) rarr Ag Cl darr +H_2 uarr`
Check whether the equation is balanced.
The number of silver atoms is unequal on the two sides. Balance ' Ag' atoms.

Apply a factor 2 to the reactant Ag
`2Ag_((s))+2HCl_((ag)rarr 2 AgCl darr + H _2 uarr `
Check whther the equatino is balanced.
The number of atoms to the elemets in the ractants is same as the number of atoms of those elements in the products.
Step IV : Write down the final balanced equation .
`2Ag_((s))+2HCl_((s))rarr 2AgCl darr +H_2 uarr`
[Note : Silver metal does not react with dilute HCl.]
