Arnav dissolves small amount of A' to a beaker containing water and observes that the solution temperature increases.
ii. What do you think substance A' is : `NaOH` or `KNO_3`? Explain.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

When NaOH is dissolved in water, there is evolution of heat (i.e., exothennic process). When `KNO_3` is dissolved in water. there is absorption of heat (i.e., endothermic process). Hence, substance ·A' is NaOH and not `KNO_3. `

Arnav dissolves small amount of A' to a beaker containing water and observes that the solution temperature increases. What type of process takes place when 'A' ls added to water, based on temperature change?

A beaker contains a solution of substance A. Precipitation of substance 'A' takes place when small amount of 'A' is added to the solution. The solution is

Bring 'active dry yeast' from the market. Mix a spoonful of yeast, two spoonful sugar with a sufficient quantity of lukewarm water in a bottle. Fix a colourless, transparent balloon on the mouth of that bottle. What changes do you observe after 10 minutes? Mix limewater with the gas accumulated in the balloon. Collect that lime water in a beaker and observe it. What do you notice?

Apparatus: Two plastic bottles, measuring cylinder, thermometer, etc Chemicals: Potassium nitrate, sodium hydroxide, water, etc. (Sodium hydroxide being corrosive, handle it carefully in presence of teacher.) Procedure: Take I 00 mL water in each of the two plastic bottles. Plastic being insulator of heat, the dissipation of heat can be prevented. Note the temperature of water in the bottles. Put 5 g potassium nitrate (KNO_3) in the bottle and shake well. Note the temperature of the solution formed. Put 5 g sodium hydroxide (NaOH) in the other bottle. Shake the bottle well. Note the temperature. In the first bottle, the process of dissolution of potassium nitrate took place while in the second bottle, the process of dissolution of sodium hydroxide took place As per your observation which one is exothermic process and which is an endothermic process?

Apparatus: Test tube, glass rod, beaker, Bunsen burner, etc. Chemicals: Hydrochloric acid, ammonia solution, magnesium strip, quick lime, etc. Activity 1: Take a small amount of hydrochloric acid in a test tube. Heat the test tube. Dip a glass rod in the ammonia solution and hold on the top of the test tube. You will observe a white smoke emanating from the tip of the glass rod. What must have happened?

Take a piece of thin aluminium sheet and dip it in water in a bucket . What do you observe ? Now shape the same piece of aluminium into a small boat and place it on the surface of water . It floats , isn't it ?

Take an empty can. Pour small quantity of water in it. Boil this water for a few minutes until the steam has driven out most of the air. Now close the can with the stopper tightly. Allow it to cool by pouring cold water over it. What do you observe ?

Apparatus: Test tube, glass rod, beaker, Bunsen burner, etc. Chemicals: Hydrochloric acid, ammonia solution, magnesium strip, quick lime, etc. Activity 3: Take water in a beaker up to half of its capacity. Add a few pieces of quick lime (calcium oxide, CaO) to it. What will you observe?
