Write down the steps in balancing the equation `N_(2(g))+H_(2(g))rarrNH_(3(g)).

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Step 1: Write the chemical equation:
`N_(2(g))+H_(2(g)) hArr NH_(3(g))`
Step II: Compare the number of atoms of the various elements present on the two sides of the equation

Step lll: Choose the reactant or product having maximum number of atoms and equalize its atoms on both the sides. Equalize the number of atoms of remaining elements in the reactants and products.
`NH_3` has maximum number of atoms. First balance 'N' as it requires a smaller factor.

Apply a factor 2 to the product `NH_3`
`N_(2(g))+H_(2(g)) hArr 2NH_(3(g))`
Check whether the equation is balanced. The number of hydrogen atoms is unequal on the two sides.

Apply a factor '3' to the product `H_2`
`N_(2(g))+3H_(2(g)) hArr 2NH_(3(g))`
Check whether the equation is balanced. The number of atoms of the elements in the reactants is same as the number of atoms of those elements in the products.
Step IV: Write down the final balanced equation. `N_2+3H_(2(g)) hArr 2NH_(3(g))`
