Why is potassium permanganate used for cleaning of water tanks?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

It can remove dissolved iron `(Fe^(2+))` ions, manganese `(Mn^(2+))` ions and `H_2S` present is water by oxidation reaction. After oxidation, these metals ions aggregate to form solid particles, which can be filtered off. It is also used to control growth of bacteria in water storage tank.
