Balance the following equation stepwise....

Balance the following equation stepwise.
`SO_(2(g))+H_2S_((aq))rarrS_((s))+H_2O_((l))`

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Step I : Write the chemical equation:
`SO_(2(g))+H_2S_(aq) rarr S_(s) +H_2O_((i))`
Step II. Compare the number of atoms to the various elements present on the two sides of the equation.

Step III : Choose the reactant or product having maximum number of atoms and equalize its atoms on both the two sides. Equalize the number of atoms of remaining elements in the ractants and products.
There are three compounds which have same number of atoms. Therefore, any one of them can be selected.Select `SO_2` and blance 'O' atoms.

Apply a factor. 2 to the product `H_2OSO_(2(g))+H_2S_((aq)) rarr S_((S))+2H_(2)O_((i))`
Check whether the equaction is balanced . The number of hydrogen atoms is unequal on the two sides.

Apply a factor 2 to the reactant `H_2SSO_(2(g))+2H_(2)S_((aq)) rarr S_((s)) +2H_2O_((I))`
Check whether the equation in balanced. The number of sulphur atoms is unequal on the two sides.

Apply a factor 3 to the product S
`SO_(2(g))+2H_2S_((aq)) rarr 3S_((s)) + 2H_2O_((l))`
Check whether the equation is balanced. The number of atoms of the elements in the teactants is same as the number of atoms of those elements in the products
Step IV Write down the final balanced equation.
`SO_(2(g))+2H_2S_((aq))rarr 3S_((s))+2H_2O_((l))`
