Carbon compounds burn in air or oxygen to form carbon dioxide `(CO_(2))` and water `(H_(2)O)` and light. Such reactions are called combustion reactions.
E.G.Combustion of ethanol :
`underset("Ethanol")(CH_(3)CH_(2)OH)+underset("Oxygen")(3O_(2))rarr underset("dioxide")underset("Carbon")(2CO_(2))+underset("Water")(3H_(2)O)+"Heat"+"light"`
