What is esterification reaction? Explain the preparation of an ester with the help of a neat labelled diagram.

i. Esters are organic compounds having functional group.

ii. Preparation of esters : When carboxylic acid are heated with alcohols in the presence of an acid catalyst, esters are produced.
E.g. When ethanoic acid is heated with ethanol in a water bath in the presence of an acid catalyst (concentrated sulphuric acid), ethyl ethanoate and water are formed.
