Why liquid drops in contact coalesce and form a single drop?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

When two liquid drops are bought into contact, they coalesce and from a single large drop. It happens because the surface energy of the large drop in less than the total surface energy of the smaller drops and every physical system tends to attain a state of minimum energy. Conversely, in breaking a large drop into smaller ones, we have to do work , as an sprayer or atomiser.
