(i) Describe the mechanism of cleansing action of soaps.
(ii) Why do soaps not work in hard water?

(i) Soap molecules form micelles where ionic end of soap dissolves in water while carbon chain dissolves in oil. The emulsion in water thus formed helps in dissolving the dirt in water and we can wash our clothes.
(ii) Soaps react with calcium or magnesium ions to form an insoluble substance which results in wastage of soap
