How would you distinguish experimentally between an alcohol and a carhoxylic acid?

Sodium bicarbonate test : Take a small amount of given compound in a test tube and add few drops of aqueous solution of `NaHCO_(3)` in it. If the `CO_(2)` gas is released with brisk effervescence then the compound is carboxylic acid.
