Ether can be dried over sodium, but not alcohol. Why?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Alcohol contains acidic hydrogen and so reacts with sodium metal and releases hydrogen.
`2C_2H_5OH + 2Na to 2C_2H_5ONa + H_2`
Ether has no OH group and does not react with sodium metal. Hence ether can be dried over sodium, but not alcohol.
