The process of converting a precipitate into colloidal state by shaking it with dispersion medium containing small amount of electrolyte is called peptisation. For example, when ferric-chloride solution is added to ferric hydroxide precipitate, a reddish brown `Fe(OH)_3` sol is obtained.
