What is the significance of leaching in the extraction of aluminium?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

The correct Answer is:
Aluminium ix extracted by the electrolysis of pure molten alumina `(Al_2O_3). Pure alumina is obtained from bauxite by leaching the ore with concentrated solution of NaOH. Then almina present in bauxite will go into solution as sodium aluminate The insoluble impurities are filtered off. Hydrated alumina is then precipitated by passing `CO_2` through the solution. The precipitate is filtered and strongly heated to form pure alumina.
