Which of the 3d series of elements exhibits the largest number of oxidation states. Why?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Mn shows the maximum number of oxidation states. This is because of its outer electronic configuration, `3d^5 4s^2` Since there is not much energy difference between 3d and 45, it uses its 3d electrons also for bonding. So Mn shows all oxidation states from `+2` to `+7`.
