Why is sulphuric acid not during the reaction of alcohols with KI?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Since con.`H_2SO_4` is an oxidising agent, It oxidises HI formed in the reaction to `I_2`
`2KI + H_2SO_4 rarr 2KHSO_4 + 2HI`
`2HI + H_2SO_4 rarr 2H_2O + SO_2 + I_2`
So HI will not be available for reaction with alcohol to from alkyl iodide.
