A given magnet has a polestrength p and dipole moment m . What is the dipole moment of a magnet obtained by cutting this magnet two identical pieces perpendicular to its length ?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

When cut into two equal halves perpendicular to its length, length of each piece = l and pole-strength is p. `therefore m^1 =p xx l = (p xx 2l)/2` = m/2. `therefore` dipole moment is halved.
