What are Cry proteins? Name an organism that produces them. How has man exploited this protein to this benefit?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Cry proteins are encoded by cry genes. These proteins are toxin, insecticidal, crystal proteins. These proteins are produced by Bacillus thuringiensis bacteria. This bacteria contains these proteins in their inactive protoxin form. Bt toxin gene/cry gene has been cloned from bacillus thuringiensis and introduced it into crop plants such as cotton plants to provide resistance ot insects without the need of insecticides. Therefore, man has exploited this protein to develop certain transgenic crops with insect resistance such as Bt cotton, Bt corn, etc.
