On the basis of quantum numbers justify that the sixth period table should have 32 elements.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Each period starts with filling of a particular shell. The sixth period starts by filling the sixth shell (n = 6). (This corresponds to l = 0,1,2,3,4,5, (s,p,d,f,g,h subsshells) and hence there are 36 orbitals). As per Aufbau principle, the energy increases in the order 6s 4f 5d and 6p.
