Give the reason for the following: Phosphorus froms `PCl_5` whille nitrogen cannot from `NCl_5`

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Nitrogen has no d-orbitals in its valence shell. It cannot expand its covalency beyond four and hence cannot from pentahalides. But phosphorus has vacant d-orbitals in its valence shell.hence it can expand its covalency beyond four and forms penthalides.
